Captain Alexander Cleveland Donaldson , 8th (Service) Battalion Cameron Highlanders, attached to the 1st Essex Regiment, was born in April 1880 and was at Loretto 1890-99. He was a Prefect and played in the XV. He played for the West of Scotland XV. At the outbreak of war he applied for a commission, and was gazetted to the 8th Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders. He was made temporary Captain in January 1915. In May 1915 he was sent to the Dardanelles, and was attached to the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment. After leading an attack in the Gallipoli Peninsula on August 6th 1915, Captain Donaldson was reported "missing", and later reported killed on that date.
LIEUTENANT ALEXANDER HOWARD DONALDSON, 2/9th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry (The Glasgow Highlanders), was born in November 1895, and was at Loretto from 1911 to 1914. He was a Corporal in the O.T.C. In December 1914 he enlisted as a private in the 9th H.L.I., and obtained his commission in the same Battalion in January 1915. Promoted Lieutenant in July 1915, he served at Maldon, Essex, for nearly a year, and was then stationed at the Curragh Camp, County Clare, Ireland, for a considerable time. Lieut. Donaldson left for France in April 1918, and was killed in action on the 12th October of that year.
Captain Henry Claude Drummond , 7th Battalion (Territorial) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was born in March 1883, came to Loretto in 1896 and left school in 1900. A seed merchant at Stirling, he applied for a commission shortly after the outbreak of war, was gazetted to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and proceeded to France in May 1915. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in January 1916. Captain Drummond was killed instantaneously by a shell, on the 24th July 1916, whilst leading his Company in a counter-attack.
